GALACTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDE

GALACTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDE, additionally called oligogalactosyllactose, oligogalactose, oligolactose or transgalactooligosaccharides (TOS), belong to the group of Prebiotics. Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food substances that beneficially have an effect on the host through stimulating the increase and/or activity of useful micro organism in the colon. GOS occurs in commercially available products including food for both babies and adults. It is a naturally occurring functional oligosaccharide found in trace amounts in the milk of animals, with higher levels in breast milk.

Galactooligosaccharides (GOS)  is stable to high temperatures and pH, have excellent solubility, low caloric value and are well suitable for use in many different human foods and animal feed applications. In the U.S. the ingredients have GRAS regulatory status, are approved as FOSHU (safe) in Japan, and can be included in the Dietary Fiber content of foods.

CHARACTERISTICS 

The sweetness is 30-40% of sucrose, and the sweetness is soft and pure

Under the same sugar content (75 Brix), the viscosity of GOS is slightly higher than that of sucrose

GOS are relatively stable under high temperature and acid conditions

Galactooligosaccharides are hygroscopic

It has good heating colourability and storage stability

The water activity of galactooligosaccharides is similar to that of sucrose

APPLICATION REGULATIONS

- Japan: Used as a component in health foods and can be used in dairy products as a prebiotic.

- United States: GRAS approved by the FDA.

- Europe: Allowed to be used as a food ingredient in infant formulas at an added level of up to 0.8g/100mL. 

- China: Approved as a new resource food and can be added to infant food and dairy products at a consumption level of no more than 15g/day .
