Isomalto-Oligosaccharide (IMO) are a mixture of Short-chain Carbohydrates obtained enzymatically from starch. They contain α-(1,6)- and α-(1,4) linkages. While human intestinal enzymes can digest α-(1,4)-glycosidic bonds, α-(1,6) linkages are not easily hydrolyzed; therefore they can reach the colon, where they are partially fermented by the microbiota. Different studies have shown that IMO show bifidogenic properties. IMO can also diminish total cholesterol and triacylglycerides levels in patients treated with hemodialysis and can stimulate intestinal and systemic immunity via a shift in the Th1/Th2 balance toward Th1-dominant immunity. In mice, such effects may be due at least in part to the relative increase in Lactobacillus numbers in the gut microbiota.
