  Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are a type of fructo-polysaccharides that consist of subunits made up of glucose and fructose. 

These FOS cannot be digested by our bodies and instead are transported to the large intestine, where they serve as food for 

microbes and promote fermentation. FOS is commonly referred to as a "prebiotic" because it acts as a fertilizer for the bacteria

 in our colon. Certain lactobacillus bacteria have been found to preferentially ferment FOS, which is why it is often recommended

  FOS are not broken down by the body and instead pass through the digestive system without being absorbed. Once they reach the colon, they become a source of nutrition for beneficial bacteria, stimulating their growth and activity.
