Golden Prebiotic -- Galacto-oligosaccharides

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are Prebiotics made up of plant sugars linked in chains. They're found in dairy products, beans, and certain root vegetables. Prebiotics act as food for "good" bacteria in the intestine. They pass undigested into the colon where they increase bowel mass and promote growth of certain bacteria. People use GOS for eczema, colic, hay fever, food allergies, constipation, obesity, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses.

GOS are another type of nondigestible fiber with prebiotic activity. β-GOS, also referred to as trans-GOS, are β-(1→6) linked galactosyl residues that terminate in a β-(1→4) linked glucose unit, with a mixture of other bond types present. β-Linked GOS are made by enzymatic synthesis from lactose using bacterial galactosidases. α-GOS are similar, but with α–(1→6) linkages and come primarily from soybeans, and their prebiotic effects are less well defined.

FUNCTIONS

Because of the configuration of their glycosidic bonds, GALACTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDE largely resist hydrolysis by salivary and intestinal digestive enzymes. 

GALACTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDE  are classified as prebiotics, defined as non-digestible Food Ingredients as substrate for the host by stimulating the growth and activity of bacteria in the colon.

The increased activity of colonic bacteria results in various effects, both directly by the bacteria themselves or indirectly by producing short-chain fatty acids as byproducts via fermentation. The effects are stimulation of immune functions, absorption of essential nutrients, and synthesis of certain vitamins.
